  • To directly observe chemical processes in unusual, new materials is a scientific dream, made possible by modern microscopy methods: researchers at Kiel University have, for the first time, captured video images of the attachment of molecules in an ionic liquid onto a submerged electrode. The images from the nanoscale world provide detailed information on the way in which chemical components reorganise when a voltage is applied. New findings based on this information may lead to improved batteries and more energy efficient coating technology or solar engineering.

  • Led by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology's Prof. Jon Otto Fossum and PhD candidate Leander Michels, the scientists discovered that clay minerals – particularly smectite – possess all the qualities needed for good CO2 capture. These include a large surface area, decent adsorption capability, the ability to selectively trap CO2 molecules before filling up on other types of molecules, low energy requirements, and reusability.

  • A new rival to the lithium-ion battery has been created that charges in under a minute and still performs almost perfectly after being recharged thousands of times. The new battery is based on aluminium instead of lithium, which should make it both cheaper and safer than their lithium-ion competitors. The US team behind the aluminium-ion battery say that the technology could find its way into the home, help store renewable energy for the power grid and even power vehicles.

  • Replacement of toxic chemical components by nontoxic and biocompatible natural analogs is one of the most popular approaches in sustainable projects. A study carried out at Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow) has shown that partial replacement of chemical compounds by their natural analogs may surprisingly lead to even more toxic products. The article published in Toxicology Research describes increased toxicity of ionic liquids after incorporation of amino acid residues.

  • Scientists in the UK and Malaysia have disclosed the research behind a fast and safe commercial technology for removing mercury from natural gas. The technology is the first solid-supported ionic liquid to be used at an industrial scale, and its development, from laboratory to full plant operation, took just four years.
