• Knitted supercapacitors could store power in your pants
  • We’ve all gotten used to carrying smart devices around in our pockets, but what if your pockets themselves were smart? Scientists have been working on smart clothing for years — and flexible circuits, sensors, and screens already exist, but what about power? Clipping a chunky lithium-ion battery to your smart pants rather defeats the purpose, doesn’t it? That’s why engineers at Drexel University and the US Naval Academy have devised a way to create knitted fabric that can store power.

  • Physicists Look at Chemicals in the Environment
  • Researchers are looking more closely at molecular mechanisms in commercial chemicals that lead to potentially damaging effects on the human body and the environment. Two of these investigations — one on the artificial sweetener sucralose, the other on a class of fluids called ionic liquids — were highlighted at the APS March Meeting 2015 in San Antonio, Texas.

  • ZIF-8 disrupts ionic liquid deep freeze
  • Ionic liquid conductivity decreases at low temperature. To overcome this, a team of researchers from across Japan have combined an ionic liquid with a metal–organic framework (MOF) to produce an unusual material that retains its conductivity below –20°C. This low-temperature conductivity, together with the attractive ionic liquid properties of non-flammability and negligible volatility, could open up the potential for safe battery and capacitor materials for use in extremely cold conditions.

  • Coffee machines could become essential pieces of lab kit for natural product chemists, for reasons beyond the power of a caffeine buzz. Researchers in Australia have used an unmodified household espresso maker to get nearly pure shikimic acid – a raw material for Roche’s antiviral drug Tamiflu – from the spice star anise.

  • Separating rare earth metals with UV light
  • Researchers from the KU Leuven Department of Chemical Engineering have discovered a method to separate two rare earth elements - europium and yttrium - with UV light instead of with traditional solvents. Their findings, which were published in Green Chemistry, offer new opportunities for the recycling of fluorescent lamps and low-energy light bulbs.

  • Researchers explore longer life cycle for batteries
  • Lithium-ion batteries are common in consumer electronics. They are one of the most popular types of rechargeable batteries for portable electronics, with a high energy density, no memory effect and only a slow loss of charge when not in use. Beyond consumer electronics, lithium-ion batteries have also grown in popularity for military, electric vehicle and aerospace applications.

  • Unique microscopic images provide new insights into ionic liquids
  • To directly observe chemical processes in unusual, new materials is a scientific dream, made possible by modern microscopy methods: researchers at Kiel University have, for the first time, captured video images of the attachment of molecules in an ionic liquid onto a submerged electrode. The images from the nanoscale world provide detailed information on the way in which chemical components reorganise when a voltage is applied. New findings based on this information may lead to improved batteries and more energy efficient coating technology or solar engineering.

  • Ionic liquids come up smelling of roses
  • A new perfume delivery system has been developed by chemists in the UK as a way of keeping sweet smells around for longer. This cleverly designed system tags fragrance alcohols – such as 2-phenylethanol, which has a rose-like scent – onto odourless ionic liquids. In the tagged form, the material has no smell. However, when it comes into contact with water, the link is broken and the fragrance is released – along with its sweet scent.

  • Clay could be used for inexpensive carbon capture
  • Led by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology's Prof. Jon Otto Fossum and PhD candidate Leander Michels, the scientists discovered that clay minerals – particularly smectite – possess all the qualities needed for good CO2 capture. These include a large surface area, decent adsorption capability, the ability to selectively trap CO2 molecules before filling up on other types of molecules, low energy requirements, and reusability.
